Welcome to the Coalition Against Hunger website.

The purpose of the Coalition Against Hunger is to feed and to see to the basic necessities of life of the people that fall through the cracks in society, no matter what the reason is that put them there. There is a very large and growing need for a food bank to be available and open to the people of western Prince William County. There is a large need for a free clinic that is accessible and does not ask questions or is affiliated with the government. There is a large need for a job center and job-training center. There is a need for a clothes closet that has room enough to have a small store like setting. The growing population in the Washington metro area is pushing the poorer of our society more and more to the western parts of our area, and therefore the need is constantly growing.

The Coalition Against Hunger was created in 1987 to address these issues on a private, non governmental involvement, grass roots basis. Using skills learned from coming up from the streets of America to success, the founders incorporated and then established a 501c tax status, thus using existing business identities, to establish a focal point for existing charitable and private efforts as well as collecting and distributing the direct contributions of food, shelter, and health care or the knowledge of where to go, who to call, etc.

The idea is to take unwanted items, sometimes treasures that for one reason or another a foundation or individual is moved to give away, sometimes items often discarded in trash heaps with use still left in the item if processed by hands skilled in assessing use of such items. The 501c status allows the CAH to give the all important receipt for tax purposes of the donor.

With 19 years of experience of already dealing with the situation, the CAH has an established record of service to the community. CAH seeks to be more effective in the future by taking a winning plan and expanding it.

The 2 Year Plan

The first need that has to be addressed is the need for a building. CAH seeks funding for the purchase of an existing building, or land to build on, that has an adequate amount of space for the corporate headquarters, the food bank, the resource center, and enough room for the job training classrooms.

CAH needs the funds to pay salaries for a staff of 5 to run the day-to-day activities. CAH is organizing a plan for health insurance for both the staff and the Board members of The Coalition Against Hunger.

The 5 Year Plan

The people in need as defined by the income limitations set by such circumstances as shelter status, income level, family size etc. need some kind of health coverage. CAH is exploring ways to do this through existing insurance plans and using private foundation funds for financial resource. Small regional private sector efforts as opposed to large State or Federal entities should be more efficient in that local ordinances will suffice for oversight, and the constant change needed to address the always varying situation will be more immediate and direct.

................................................................................................................................................................

CAH helps with an aids orphanage in Kenya Africa with food and clothing and other necessary articles.

CAH established a fund for the benefit of indigent musicians and roadies in 2005.

CAH is seeking grant writers. Funding in the way of money comes from paperwork. All of the proper paperwork as far as identity and purpose are in place. The need for people to do the writing for grants is evident and urgent. Commissions from the funding can cover labor expenses. Models can be made available in a copyrightable format, free or for a small fee over the internet and useful for other areas and groups who do not wish to duplicate already established procedure.

CAH is a success and wishes to keep the ball rolling foreseeing a day when the problems of hunger, homelessness, and lack of health care are taken off the agenda of America and handled by a local business skilled in management and solutions to the problem and privately funded instead of throwing tax money at the problem.

We have been recognized for our work in the community by the Lion's Club,  the Mason's Lodge, and the  Prince William County Human Rights Commission.   We are a  501 (C) (3) non-profit organization, and can issue an IRS recognized  form for all donations.

Eatery cooks up dollars for the hungry

FRONT ROYAL - The Coalition Against Hunger is hoping that a taste for turkey will turn into dollars to feed the hungry.

Formally based in Haymarket, the group is the first beneficiary of "Fund Raising Wednesdays" at the Royal Scoop & Eatery at 21 S. Royal Ave.

Warren County resident Leslie Gardner opened the restaurant in September, and is delighted that the Coalition Against Hunger is planning to operate a distribution center  from her business and

that they kicked off  the weekly fundraising  program.

The Coalition Heads South

During the past year, the Coalition Against Hunger has provided some needed food, water, and other assorted items to the hurricane victims in the South.

On the first trip, non-perishable foods and water were delivered to the volunteers at the Ascension Parish Hall in Kiln, MS., near Waveland in Hancock County.

All of this was made possible by the generous donations from  Dehaven 7-Up Corporation in Winchester, VA, the main distributors for Berkeley Springs Water (Thank  you Leroy!)

On the second trip, we arrived with over 5000 pounds of frozen chicken.  This was graciously donated by Pilgrim's Pride plant in Moorefield, WV.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of the people involved in any way with these ventures.
